So, there's social anxiety, which is not rational at all. You can work on it and reduce it over time, but it's still a thing, and it can be and absolutely is brought to the forefront when you go against the grain. There are days when you're able to say, "hey, who gives a crap? I don't need permission to like what I like," and then there are days when you're like, "oh gods everyone hates me." The goal over time is to get to a place where the former reaction happens a lot more often than the latter, but in the meantime, well...yeah.

Apart from that, fandom can be very hostile toward dissenting opinions. In extreme cases, if you admit to shipping or being into something, there's a chance you'll face some degree of harassment. I personally think people should just do their thing regardless, but I can understand why someone would want to fly under the radar.
