Fandom Berserker Buttons?

Are there any things that never fail to annoy you or make you mad ever time you see them?

For me it is when people suggest that Martin is the first and only guy to ever write fantasy for adults and that there hasn't been any adult fantasy before ASOIAF. I never fail to get mad every time someone says that.

Buuut he's the first person EVER to write darker fantasy, and don't you realize that anything that isn't full of incest and rape is obviously for kids only!! Silly child!

Yep, I hate that too. I mean maybe if you've read LITERALLY NO FANTASY or something, idk. Or the people who act like anybody with any taste at all must love ASOIAF. My taste is just fine, thanks. I just don't like the books.

Heh. I think this happens when people haven't read much fantasy but suddenly discover GoT and think they're now an expert in fantasy literature.

"Levi Rivaille". Just... do you not realize how fucking stupid that is.

I thought his name was Levi Ackermann?

His name is absolutely Levi Ackerman. But some yahoos still call him Rivaille, or Levi Rivaille, for some unknown reason. Probably stupidity.

I'm late, but I can explain.

Names can very easily be lost in the "translation" to Japanese from other cultures.

"Rivaille" came before there were official translations because they wrote his name in the manga like it looks: Re-bi (Reh-bii).

Problem is, "Levi" doesn't sound like it's spelled to a Japanese person. To be pronounced correctly, it needed to be "Ri-bai"

So fan translators completely guessed at the name, and got it wrong, but wrong spellings/pronounciations still stick (for a professional snafu that persists to this day: Viz, "Inu Yasha", and spelling "Tessaiga" as "Tetsusaiga").

Oh, I know all this - I've been in the fandom for a while XD It doesn't change the fact that this is my berserker button.

But what you're saying doesn't make sense. First off, afaik the spelling of his name hasn't changed, and it was never spelled レヴィ, but always リヴァイ.
Secondly, all three versions are pronounced basically the same, with variations - "rivai". "Rivaille" is still pronounced the same way - it's most definitely not pronounced anything like "re-bi". In the anime too, it's always pronounced ree-bai.
The only confusion was that people saw "rivai" and didn't know what to make of that, so somebody came up with the "rivaille" spelling. I mean, if his name had been written "re-bi", who the hell would translate that as "rivaille" which is pronounced "ree-vai"?
Nobody that I've seen basically ever pronounces his name leh-vee (I mean, except me and other Hebrew speakers. Because that's the original and we can't resist).

It also doesn't change the absolutely ridiculous fact that calling him Levi Rivaille is basically "rivai rivai".

Insisting a fanon characterisation or a headcanon is ACTUAL TRUE CANON.

you mercifully don't see this too much recently, but the absolute bullshit that Kathryn "Dry Ice Tampons" Janeway was the first female captain in Star Trek. There were a bunch of women captains in Next Gen. And, unlike Janeway, they were actually sane and competent.

US-americanocentrism. Do you call it that? I don't like plain stupid antiamericanism but I am critical about the fact that the net with its lingua franca being english is so very americanocentric. Everyone just assumes that you have to adhere to aerial cultural standards and share theit values and taboos to every extend. Like how some time ago I aparrently stepped into a hornet's nest with saying something that was interpreted as a typical libertarian stance even though in my country the connotations of that particular topic aren't that loaded or even exclusively libertarian. But I get sorted into a drawer of American political stereotypes I don't even know about. That sucks.

People who insist or claim that Mario is an abusive brother to Luigi. I know it's a really weird thing to get irrationally angry about, and a lot of it stems from edgelords trying to make things more grimdark than they need to be, but the games pretty much scream the exact opposite in every way, especially in the RPGs and some spin-off material.

Also, anyone who takes Game Theory's "theories" like gospel truth. I'll give MatPat credit for his research in some episodes, but the majority of them just reach WAY too hard (Sans is actually Ness, anyone?) or make absolutely no sense whatsoever. But some people, usually those who lack critical thinking skills, just eat this shit up and actually believe all of it to be immutable and 100% true.
