Re: Characters You Hate Seeing Being Called "Whiny"

A friend and I have the theory that the reason that so many teenagers hated Shinji when Eva first came out was because he was a lot like we were, personality-wise/how awful we'd be as heroes, and since anime was our funtimes escape, seeing someone so brutally similar to us shoved through the ringer turned us against him for, essentially, not being better than we were.

Re-watching the series years later, I definitely sympathize and empathize with Shinji so much more. I think he's an amazing character.

That makes a lot of sense to me, actually. He's definitely not a character you admire so much as one you empathize with, and if the watcher is looking for a more traditional hero character I can see where they'd be disappointed.

I watched it for the first time as a teenager, but I'd heard a lot about the series' reputation by then so I knew what I was getting into. And I've always loved characters who badly need a hug, haha.
