I agree.
I was also much younger when I played it for the first time, so that also took a bit of the impact, I think. I distinctly remember playing the part with the Calm Lands for the first time and having a lot of fun there with all the new monsters and the Chocobos and everything but playing it again years later, I didn't really want to spend a lot of time there because it's such a strangely depressing place once you actually pay attention to the story about it...
