I get good reviews by nice people and I feel like my consistant reviewers really appreciate my style.

and that is ultimately more important in the long run. so people write sex and it gets scads of OMGILUWRIETMOARPLZ? I think gen fandoms tend to develop a little more depth than that. it means you are getting people who appreciate you and what you write, as opposed to fly by commentors who are only in it for the sex and end up being fly-by-night friends, anyway.

Well, I know people who write romance and smut and do their best to do well with it and to be deep and to put in character development and ship development.... so I can admire that...

But I don't think I could write a believable sex scene to save my life, and I'm just not into the "shippy" stuff myself. When it comes to fanfiction (any kind of creative writing), I've always written *what entertains me* - even if it's weird or unpopular, ditto with art and it seems that I get a small following that appreciates it, and that suits me much better than If I were to try to squeeze myself into something I'm not comfortable with.

In fact, I have done that - There's a near-slash fic I wrote once to try to impress a friend I had at the time and, in hindsight, I screwed up the characterization and I find it a poor fic. I keep it up on my fanfiction.net account because a lot of people seem to like it (and I don't want to take away their enjoyment). It's probably one of my best-reviewed fics, but I can't help but think of it as something of a personal failing.
