Not the OP, but I think the issue crops up in the way they canonically act. While they might act differently if they were in the 'real world', since Avatar is aimed at a younger/family crowd, they don't canonically speak that way. It's sort of jarring to see them suddenly saying things so far off from their usual speech, even if it's in an understandable context.

See, I can see it being jarring if Aang all of a sudden is dropping the F-bomb every other word. There're some people who just don't curse. Ever. Even in real life.

But Sokka, in the middle of a battle, realizing that his sister might be about to be seriously maimed? Yes, I can see swearing there. Zuko, cursing his father? Yeah, a "damn" or three might slip out, I think. The canon writing's good enough that it doesn't matter to me that it isn't there when this kind of situation arises, though!

I guess it's just a difference of taste, really.

(I still want to know how "damn" and "hell" apparently can only be used in a world that has either nondescript monotheism or Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, though.)

If we want to be literal about it, the word "hell," coming from the name of the old Norse goddess Hel, has no place in any setting that doesn't have some sort of Germanic connections. And "damn" only works in a world that demonstrates belief in condemnation to an afterlife of suffering, because... well, isn't it obvious?

Yes, but that's being almost obnoxiously literal. (PLEASE NOTE THE ALMOST.) I do see your point, though.
