#08. That's why I use this handy # for my responces, see! Though it seems the mods have started to add a 0. Nice, but "find" will still find dates.
#10. Erm, they're based on the same manga. Meaning, not remake.
#14. I get more comments for my gen art than I do my slash fic or art. (And since I don't keep count of feedback for individual fics it's a bit hard for me to say with certainty what fic got more comments than others, but the last fic that I got more responces to than I ever expected was gen.) I just think gen needs to be generally better than slash or het to gain attention, because it doesn't have as large an "automatic" audience, but that doesn't mean good gen is snubbed. It just needs to, y'know, actually be good. Honestly, I think you're just overrating gen because you like it, just like slashers overrate slash because they like it. It just so happens there are more slashers than gen-lovers. (o lawl, that sounded like I think my gen is godly. But I mean it in general.)
#22. Thanks for the lol!
#23. I'm not sure where KBell gets her large adoring fanbase from, but it does seem to seep into every possible fandom, doesn't it. It boggles me. (I don't dislike her, I just don't get the major hype.)
#26. That series was made for f/f, wasn't it. I don't disagree with you that the fanbase is probably too small for a kink meme, but I do think you should write it ... shame otherwise.
#28. Mmmmmm ... no.
#36. Most of the time, I take fandom complaining about a translation to mean the translator did a good job of actually translating. Because most of the time, what fandom wants from a translation is things like "sensei" or "oniichan" to be left intact, and a 15-page glossary of Japanese terms in the back of the book. And sorry, that's not a good translation. I'd be more sad if you succumbed to fandom than if you didn't try to do your best. Protip: fandom will complain about anything.
#61. Me too.
OP 14
(Anonymous) 2008-03-16 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)I thought it was suitable for someone like me to write this secret because I neither do fanart or fanfic (gen & smut), but I enjoy both aspects of it (just that because of the number of smut > gen, it feels harder to find good smut fic. Based on my own observations of fandom and what I deem good/bad, your case seems to be a pleasant abnormality, but still a trend serverely lacking in fandom.
Re: OP 14
Yeah, because there aren't as many people actively interested in gen as there are people actively interested in slash. But your secret was (as far as I could see) about gen fic being ignored by fandom in terms of comments and recognition, so I'm not sure what the number of gen fic or art that you can or can't find has to do with it? I agree with you completely that there isn't as much gen as slash or het, sure. But you're talking about something completely different from your secret now. Also:
fanart or fanfic (gen & smut)
the number of smut > gen
Your comment makes me think that you think "gen" is the opposite of porn. It's not. Gen is a category alongside slash and het. If more people are interested in slash or het, it's not (at least not solely) because they're more interested in porn than, uh, no porn. Pairing fics aren't inherently about the NC-17, ya know. For what it's worth, I write and draw gen but the slash and het I write and draw are almost never rated NC-17, either. (The exception is my RPS, but when something has a canon, I don't care all that much about porn.)
Re: OP 14
(Anonymous) 2008-03-16 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)In WHICH fandoms? the one's I'm involved in the gen production is not only high but there is quite a bit of it. I think it's dangerous to paint all of FANDOM with this brush considering each fandom has its own personality.
Re: OP 14
(Anonymous) 2008-03-16 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)I've been in a lot of different fandoms, and all of them have a great predominance of slash, even if they start off with some sprinkling of gen. If you write gen on the 'net, you are lonely indeed.
