Well, if the eagles never came, and the destruction of Mount Doom had involved a pyroclastic flow, and if they were far enough away not to be outright vaporised, then it could have happened that they ended up as tephra casts like the bodies in Pompeii. An ashen silhouette of the ring bearers in their last moments. It does have a sort of poetry to it.

I really love that scene/screencap, especially the look on Frodo's face, like he's a little sad he's going to die but he's so much more relieved and thankful that it's over and the goddamn ring is gone and is so much happier now than he has been for the past few weeks. While Sam, who has been completely unselfish and devoted and self-sacrificing all through the quest is finally allowing himself to be sad about his own personal selfish things like never having the chance to ask Rosie out. It's just a really good scene and the idea of that moment being preserved is definitely an appealing one.
