I don't know what Anders did, but I will say that most characters the internet thinks did nothing wrong, did do something very wrong.

Anders blew up a cathedral, potentially killing hundreds of people, to trigger a war because ages are oppressed, imprisoned and abused almost universally in southern Thedas. It set off a war between mages and templars (the knighthood whose job was to guard mages, but also the ones who were most likely to abuse them).

His methods were extreme but I wonder, if it weren't him, would something worse have happened elsewhere instead? The mage-templar war was something I can imagine was always going to happen, one way or another.
