It is especially annoying when introducing someone new to it because some of the songs just really make the scenes (both "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and "Hey Man, Nice Shot" from Skin or "Renegade" at the end of Nightshifter).

Also, sometimes it doesn't make sense! The season finale of episode one plays Bad Moon Arising (original) but the immediate continuation in season two plays a cover (iirc).

It's just not right to see Dean take off his skin to anything other than "Hey Man, Nice Shot."

I don't know, hearing "I don't wanna be a freak show pretty boy anymore" is pretty fun, too.

I bought Series Three of New Who because the Netflix version cut out the Master dancing to "I Can't Decide."

I'd hate to be the person tasked with music clearance. With so many distribution streams and licence holders who are okay with one thing and not another or a hundred other hassles, it must be a nightmars.

Yeah, I was thinking that a possible reason for the change might have to do with licensing having expired or renegotiated or something? And I no no idea if royalties work differently on DVDs than they do on streaming media.

Yes, formats matter for licensing.

NA

When Supernatural started (2005), streaming wasn't a big thing (Netflix began streaming in 2007, Hulu launched in 2007), so they probably didn't have them in the original licensing agreements (which the DVDs would be part of) and had to renegotiate for that and it was probably too much to pay so they did replacement songs. Sadly, this is something that has caused no end of problems with the release of earlier shows on other formats, since songs were often only licensed for the original broadcast and reruns.

Oh that annoys me! I can't remember what other things I've had the same issue with, but sometimes they do it when they release things actual years later in our region code. I wait so long for you, and you're not even what I remember. :'(

The music is a big part of the show so I can see why that'd be annoying. I hear certain songs on the radio and associate them with the show so this makes a lot of sense to me. It does seem to have a certain soundtrack.

I find it incredibly annoying as well. It's one of the main reasons why I still buy the DVD copies.

I could not agree more, OP! I think they replaced some of the Carry On My Wayward Son intros too, which is absolute blasphemy.

Music sets the tone, so if you change the songs...It annoys me too. You are not alone.

SPN goes back to the original music some time after the first season, but up until then I couldn't stand to watch it on Netflix.

I remember reading that this was why it took so long to get "Cold Case" released on some format; the songs were so integral and it was a total mess to get them licensed.

Yup, it's the worst. Why I never bought season one of WKRP, because they replaced most of the music with generic garbage.

I feel exactly the same about Roswell.
