Mark Does Stuff

Thoughts?
I've been lurking on his site/s for a few months, and my feelings are pretty mixed. I'm curious to know what others think.

There's at least one person here who is extremely against the site for being too extreme in its approach to social justice. I haven't really paid much attention to the site in a long time - just because of boredom - so I can't say. I do get the sense that Mark is one of those people who really isn't reliable. But that's all.

I do still really like MRHP though.

Eh to be honest, some of the reasons they've stated for why they hate Mark do come across as genuine bigotry (hating him for being fat and a gay guy).

And this is coming from someone who quit MRHP because I got sick of "DIE IN A FIRE!!1!!" in response to every character's big fuck up.

Yeah they do seem a little vitriolic but like I say I try not to judge it since I am unfamiliar.

I can be right about him being a bad reviewer and still think he is a bearded fat man-cunt too. People can be more than one thing, but not according to Mark though.

Just an FYI, I've been very outspoken against that site, but I'm not the one who keeps calling him a fat fairy or whatever the hell.

I left the site--was never a commenter, just a lurker--because I got sick and tired of more and more of his reviews being either about How Terrible His Life Was (His Childhood: The Endless Tragedy Edition) or about how Such And Such Is Wrong.

I just wanted to read reviews of the series he was doing. I didn't want all that other stuff. I didn't mind some of the other stuff, and when there was a good mix of 'hey, can we talk about this issue' and 'hey, this is about the story!' it was fine with me, but it tipped over to almost always talking about issues and... well, I wasn't reading for that.

I still like a number of his older reviews, because they actually dealt with what he was reading/watching instead of... what we get now, for the most part.

I'm not a fan. I read him back in his Twilight-recapping days and enjoyed those, but lately it seems like... IDK how to describe it, like he's not interested in engaging with a series in any way that doesn't revolve directly around him? He misses very basic plot points then acts as though it's the canon's fault and spends more time talking about himself than about the series he's consuming. His anime reviews are especially shallow, which is frustrating because I'd been looking forward to those.

He misses very basic plot points
Oh, agreed. The number of times I've seen him like, "What's going on??? I don't understand???", and I'm sitting there going, "The book explained like two pages ago, dude. Pay attention."

He ignores plot points too. Not just misses, but flat out ignores the plot if it suits him. He knows he has got to scream about extreme social justice concepts (that is why he labels the word "idiot" as being extremist hate speech against the mentally ill) if he wants to get his fanbase to donate. In order to do that he has to ignore plot and characterization a lot, because a lot of what he labels as being "problematic" is fully explained within both of those.

There used to be a named user on here that said that they got bullied off of his site. I can't, for the life of me, remember what their name was, though.

Anyways, I used to visit the site when when he was watching ATLA and I read through his Twilight and Harry Potter stuff. I found his review style to get stale after a while and I wasn't particularly interested reading his stuff when I wasn't familiar with the source material. I also thought the that way the comment section was ran was really restrictive and I never ended up posting anything for fear of saying the wrong thing.

I really liked his original twilight reviews and read them as they were coming out. Early on, he made some pretty good observations about the books and had some analysis that I thought was insightful but eventually his commentary became kind of dull/repetitive/unfunny. He also got kind of whiny tbh

I enjoy reading some of his reviews, but it's gotten really frustrating because he's very closed minded about things, like - for example he decided in the first few episodes of Supernatural that Dean Winchester was a typical dude-bro macho type and from that point on no matter what evidence the show presented to the contrary, that was his reading on the character, no matter what - which is pretty frustrating to anyone who's seen, IDK, past the first season. :/

And he doesn't allow you to say ANYTHING even potentially derogatory on the site. I mean, to an extreme. Your comments can get deleted if you use the word "dumb". As in, "I thought that plot point was really dumb."

And he misses a lot of stuff because he's talking for his reaction videos while watching shows, etc. I mean, crucial stuff that's key to understanding the characters, etc.

I've been reading his reviews for years now but I'm about ready to rage-quit at this point.

I wildly enjoyed him reading Harry Potter, but I haven't followed anything else

What used to be humorous has become schtick. He gives his fan base all the campy overreaction they want, misses a lot of stuff in the process, and while I feel like he's mellowed a little bit on relating everything to his tragedy magnet life and the injustices of the world, it's still a very strict place in the name of protecting the unfortunate. And sometimes it goes to the extreme.

But when he's really into a show that isn't super problematic, it can be fun too.

I only follow his youtube and not his site

his reading of 50 shades was some of the funniest shit I've heard so I can't hate

Used to be funny, but has got very stale and is just repeating the same joke over and over. Plus he willfully ignores context and non-American cultures and history in order to deliver that joke. Yes, we get it. Everything is horribly problematic, Mark. Thank you.
