I think that has a lot to do with the style, tropes and reader expectations for fanfic being different than for published works, and a lot of authors just can't switch gears easily. And yes, I agree... a lot of people in fandom read lots of fanfic and not as much published fic. They lack a solid grounding in how published fic is different.
