They want to be judged by their writing without their reputation but they still want people to read it. If they were just some random nobody their book would likely be unpopular. It's like when JK Rowling tried to write under a pseudonym and then had to come out because no one was reading it.

She came out because she was outed by the press. For what appeared to be a first time author, the sales of the book were actually pretty decent even before her identity was revealed.

Yeah, that makes sense: it's basically a marketing thing.

(For some reason I was thinking that the secret referred to a fanfic writer, which I realize now was completely silly on my part. Amazing how much clearer one thinks after a night's sleep. *g*)
