Okay, this might sound pathetic, but... how do you make friends on Tumblr? I'm super new to the site and I genuinely don't understand it yet! Like, what's the best way to start talking to mutuals/total strangers? Is there any etiquette I might not know about? I'm really just confused here (and worried about coming across as accidentally creepy or something, lmao).

replies/likes are a great way to get started, and generally start to build up an idea of a person's life/ideas/humor, and then you can be like "@sparrow i saw this video of a beach umbrella blowing away set to 'i want to break free'" and i'd be like "yoooooooooo that is me"

Reblog things. Post fandom discussion or headcanon things. I didn't know anyone when I joined. Then I started reblogging Tolkien fandom stuff and posting headcanons and soon got a following. As my stuff got reblogged I got more followers.

Honestly, two of my best friends - I made a comment on a confession post and they liked what I said and followed me so I followed back, and another one I was also laughing at their tags and they followed me. I also have plenty of friends who I don't follow for various reasons (i'm not sure wtf they're talking about) but we get along fine.

Just follow people who follow you and look interesting. They like you, that's why they're there! Allow people to reply to your posts. Encourage conversation.

Respond to posts they make! I made a really good friend on tumblr when I posted a silly cosplay picture of mine, they sent me a message saying they liked it, and then we just struck up a conversation from there. Starting from common interests is the best way to go.

I think the easiest way to get started is to reblog posts and include commentary on them (even if it's just in the tags. A lot of people read the tags of posts that people reblog from them). Most people also enjoy getting asks from people who like their fics/gifsets/meta/whatever

Make friends with someone on tumblr who is very outgoing and then mooch off of them for other friends. That's what I did anyway haha.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically what everyone said, you can do it anon!!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Just start conversations or contribute to conversations. Hell, rambling in the tags works. Takes some time then people you follow start recognising your name and tagging you in things they think you like/you tag people in things you think they'd like and bam! Tumblr friends

Reblog a lot and add your comments. Tag heavily to get peoples' attention. Have a queue and fill it up. Post your own thoughts on fandom stuff. (I have an FPS History series that I've been working on and it seems to have gotten a bit of attention.)

Above all though, do not get discouraged if someone gets upset at you for contacting them or even reblogging them. A friend of mine recently got on Tumblr and was screamed at for messaging someone -- "who the fuck just messages someone outta nowhere" was the general sentiment IIRC. And I once had someone get outrageously angry with me because I followed them and reblogged one of their posts with my comment; they sent me a nasty message telling me that they don't want me following or reblogging them because they looked at my tumblr and decided I was "too negative" and "they're not on tumblr for that." (I post kittens, pretty photography, video game stuff, and vintage sci-fi art.) It was literally the first time I'd ever reblogged them, too, but I honored their wish of not following them because I'm not on tumblr for that kind of bullshit.

Don't. Tumblr's a fuckin cesspit, you don't wanna make friends there.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I knew this would get a comment like this. Tumblr's actually an okay site, you just have to be vigilant about who you follow & block every single thing that bugs you, since there's no real way to filter people otherwise! It's a messy site, and it's hard to navigate, but it's mostly a pretty decent place with plenty of awesome people.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
lol no. it's nothing but SJW tittybabies telling people to go kill themselves over fictional characters.

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2016-04-16 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I've been on tumblr for 5 years and I have never seen that happen amongst any of my followers or mutuals.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I've been on Tumblr 6 months and that is ALL I see people do. I stay for the gifs.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, you're not doing it right. Trust me, I tried to use Tumblr once a couple years ago, and had to leave like half a year later because I was following all the wrong people & it was really making me angry in general, you know?

But I started again, more recently, and focused all my attention on fandom blogs. I chose to only follow people whose opinions mostly align with mine and/or people who are really chill about others disagreeing with them, and it's working out!

Don't follow any teenagers at all, and always check out their about page and personal/text posts before following. If they start posting things that annoy you, block the tags they're using or unfollow them immediately. Notice who they're friends with/who they reblog from the most & follow them too, etc. etc.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, too much work. I'll just keep looking at gifs and hating everybody on that site. Way less hassle.

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2016-04-16 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Basically this.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
I came to fandom to squee. Who wants to put that much work into avoiding hate?

You're obviously following some very immature bloggers.

Tumblr, like any other social media site, is what you make of it. If your experience is of it is a fucking cesspit, well, you're the one who's choosing to play in the raw sewage.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
The raw sewage is already there to play in. Ergo, Tumblr is fucking awful.

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2016-04-16 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Literally just start cold calling people, following a ton of randoms, stuff like that. Also, people love it when you leave nice tags on their posts, but don't leave obnoxious comments on the end of a post unless it really adds something because sometimes that can be annoying. But I really wouldn't worry too much since tumblr is laid back...if you're following the right people.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
if they post fic or art, then send them a message telling them what specifically you like about a certain piece. most people love getting asks like that and they'll probably remember you for it

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Use chat to send a compliment about a post they made.
