What did you or do you like about SPN?

I honestly liked the cryptid of the week thing it did through the first few seasons, and the angel thing at first.

I loved the entire aesthetic of season one and the whole "hunter" culture in the early days. It felt so authentic and like half "On the Road" half "Coast to Coast AM."

say what you want about the fandom, but it has some pretty talented porn writers so that's definitely a plus. for spn itself, I just love the characters of sam and dean. they're both very flawed and fucked up and I don't always agree with the direction that the writers take them but I love their relationship.

Is Poisontaster still around? That girl was like a porn grand maestro or something, like good goddamn!

I've never seen a single episode before in my life, but I did find some ... Castiel (?) fanfic rec list once & read a couple out of boredom. They were pretty well-written!

though I had to quickly Google to make sure that they weren't the brothers, lmao.

I liked Dean way more than Sam. But towards the end of my watching, I enjoyed the side characters 100x more than Sam and Dean. I would have killed for a couple episodes devoted to Castiel and Crowley in some kind of Odd Couple situation.

Also, the music is fantastic.

And the fanfic was pretty damn good back when I read it.

I loved the first three seasons. They were pretty much a perfect monster-of-the-week/slight horror show with great music and funny moments. The fourth and fifth seasons were also OK, even though I didn't care for the angels and the sibling drama got too heavy at times.

Nothing. SPN is the only show I've ever watched that doesn't have a single redeeming quality.

I really loved the first few seasons when it focused on Americana. It reminded me of the times X-Files would do that and I thought that's what distinguished the show from others of its ilk.

(And then they brought in angels and it became very generic BUT WHATEVER. We'll always the Hook Hand Guy and Bloody Mary episodes.)

I liked the monsters they used in the earlier seasons and I really enjoyed the introduction of the angels, also I liked the music choices as well.

Dean is my favorite character and Season 4 was my favorite season. I liked Castiel, but especially as he was in earlier season where he was badass and alien and not cutesy (I don't mind cutesy confused Castiel but it feels like a different character).

I liked that Gabriel was the trickster but I didn't like that they made him Loki. I like a lot of one-off characters. I did like Charlie (though I have yet to see the first episode she was in). Of the non-Season 4 episodes, I really liked Mystery Spot.

I also like John but probably more as my headcanon where he wasn't as neglectful as he really was. I hate most of the stuff they've added about him in later seasons, and I tend to ignore that stuff. I'd love to see him back (maybe in a flashback). I really want to see him learn about his father's Men of Letters status and where he went. I wonder what his father would've thought if they'd had to team up together.

If it's any consolation, jeffrey dean morgan himself has said during at least one con that he dislikes what happened with john's character in later seasons (https://twitter.com/fangasmspn/status/666028603595816962) so you're definitely not alone

I only liked the first two seasons. I liked the monster of the week, drawing from a lot of different sources thing. I stopped watching season four cause I didn't care about the overarching plot and all the angels.

I was obsessed with the show for the first 2.5 seasons (posted on the TWOP boards under the name Uranium), and what hooked me was the good son/bad son subversion, with Dean (uneducated outlaw rebel persona to the outside world) being the Good Son in that family and Sam (average cleancut college student) being the black sheep. I...I just really loved that, and I LOVED the arc at the end of season 1 into season 2 revolving around John as their father. I loved seeing Dean move from sunny wiseass to profoundly grieving after John's death. It just really affected me, and I saw a lot of myself in Dean, in terms of his relationship with John, working tirelessly for John's approval and never feeling like he had truly gotten it, and then John's death putting a premature end to that quest. That entire arc of season 2 was incredibly satisfying to me, but for some reason the decision of the show to make Dan sell his soul for Sam felt entirely wrong to me, and it pissed me off so badly that I couldn't make it more than a couple months into season 3.

That is actually the last time I was a hardcore fan of anything. I had spent so much time and obsessive energy over thise 2.5 years, ultimately to no end, that I can't get that worked up over anything like that anymore. Plus, the message board format really worked well for me as a medium of fan engagement, and since TWOP ended, there's no longer a place for me to go to satisfy that same need.

...and that is more than you ever wanted to know about me and SPN.

"the good son/bad son subversion"

Yes, this, particularly because when I first watched it, I quickly figured out that Dean was the favorite son, because he's the good little soldier, and Sam wasn't. And then, getting to the end of the first season, and suddenly there's that scene with Sam and Daddy Winchester, and I realized that Sam was the favored son, not Dean. Totally took me by surprise, but then made sense once I saw it, too. Was just really impressed with the character work in the early seasons, before it wandered off into angel politics.

First episode was a bit of a creepy, different kind of ghost story that I didn't usually see on TV, so I was intrigued. By the second or third episode, I'd glommed onto Dean as a character and never really let go.

I watched SPN very recently, just to see what all the fuss was about.

I liked the first few seasons with the whole "on the road" thing and monster-of-the-week. It felt very... gothic Americana cheesiness. The moments of genuine horror and gore were great.

The whole family story arc and themes in S1-5 were very well done. I loved the big build-up to the climax with the Horsemen. The whole episode with Death - seriously my favourite character. I kinda liked how God was basically a washed-up depressed writer, and I wished they'd explored that a bit more.

I have no intention of watching beyond S5. It feels finished now, I mean, how do you top something of the kind of epic scale of the apocalypse?

Agreed. I feel like that SPN S5 finale feels "complete" to me, just like the S5 Buffy finale (where she died) felt like a natural and perfect ending. While I always like some of what comes after (in both series), it feels like that was the high-water mark, if you wanted to go out on a good note.

This season in particular, I've especially enjoyed episodes like Baby and Red Meat that really show how hard and dangerous hunting is and how they limp out of one series of injuries and near-death experiences to another and just keep going. All the time, I love the music, the humor, the variety of weird supernatural entities and the idea that almost everything exists in that universe, and the constant sense of being on a a real journey with these guys, with all their history and baggage and that long list of others they've loved and lost along the way. Above everything else, I love Dean (my very favorite) and Sam and their insane love for each other. You cry, you laugh, you want to smack their stupid faces until they stop fighting, it's great. Getting to stare at Dean for hundreds of hours isn't bad, either. lol

I love Dean. (I mean I love Sam too, but DEAN.) I love the Impala, I love the relationship between the brother, I love the music, I love the mood whiplash that sometimes happens because these are two guys who are used to being in life-or-death situations so of course they're going to joke about it.

There have been some bad episodes, there have been some arcs that were less-than flawlessly plotted. But there has never been a season when there weren't at least a few episodes that I have absolutely freaking LOVED.
