PC Master Race Modding

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Just spent the past three hours trying to mod DAI. I think I MAYBE finally got it to work? (If the DAI modding community was even half as organized as the TES modding community I would have been able to fix the problem in 15 minutes rather than having to search through a bunch of goddamn tumblr posts to figure out what was wrong)

So F!S, what are your favorite mods for any game? Least favorite? Are you only into the lore-friendly stuff, or are you the type of person who goes racing across Skyrim on Randy Savage? Got a modding horror story you'd like to share?

For Inquisition, I have a hair mod replacements for pretty much every single option available + the deshine mods for absolutely everyone + eyebrow & Skyhold pajama retextures, haha (I also changed Blackwall & Josephine's hairstyles). It's all only visual stuff, but I'm shallow enough for these things to be pretty important to me, haha.

I'm new to PC gaming in general, so I don't have much else? I downloaded a bunch of mods for Fallout New Vegas, which I've already played on PS3, but I might as well give those a shot eventually.

I also own Skyrim, but I haven't touched it (or the mods) yet. It's kind of daunting, honestly!

I'm so leery about NPC appearance mods. XD I generally mod after playing through the game, and it can be so jarring to have the characters suddenly look different. I almost always go for the gameplay mods.

Skyrim was actually the easiest game I've ever modded! And I'm running about 130 mods, most of them pretty intensive! Between the tesgeneral guide and the STEP wiki I really had no trouble.

Installing an ENB was hellish, though. Skyrim looks so much better with the ENB on, but it took me a good 12 hours of dicking with it before I finally got it working right.

I was the same way about NPC appearance mods, but Project Beauty for Fallout 3 (it's under a different name now) is generally pretty subtle, though it makes some pretty severe changes to minor characters to make their appearances more closely fit their personality and character type.

That looks pretty good!

The best big appearance mod I've ever used was Oblivion Character Overhaul V2. It totally alleviates the potato people problem the game had, most of the NPCs actually look GOOD with it installed.

Yeah, I try not to use the mods that change their faces around too much, but I think clothes/hair are fair game! Honestly, Blackwall just looks so much better with a bun & a properly trimmed beard that I can't regret it, haha (I couldn't bring myself to remove it entirely, though, since that'd just be ... wrong. Also, he gets a bunch of dialogue/banter about it, so it'd be a bit strange if everyone kept talking about an invisible beard).

The difficult part about Skyrim for me is the sheer number of mods available. Seriously, I don't even know where to start looking. There's just... so many. I'd also probably need to get a feel for the game first to know what I'd even want to mod, you know?

My recommendation is get the unofficial patches first, install that, then play the game vanilla. Once you get a sense of how the game's systems work, venture into modding. :)

Skyrim is really easy to mod if you're careful and methodical. Not like Morrowind which is a friggin' nightmare.

Best Fallout NV mod is Project Nevada if you want a full-game overhaul.

Well, the most daunting thing about Skyrim for me is just how many mods there are + not knowing what kind of mods I'd even want. I'm brand new to the series in general so I've got no idea what to expect! For example, I started it up once to see what the character creation was like & just ended up confused by all the race choices, haha.

http://skyrimgems.com/ Try this -- it's a good collection of lore-friendly mods that integrate smoothly into the game. :)

(also the nice thing about the race choices in SR is that they matter very little compared to prior games -- my choice of Khajiit didn't really matter much except for a single quest.)

Fallout Wanderer's Edition for Fallout 3 is an amazing overhaul mod. It's so popular that New Vegas ripped it off for "Hardcore Mode" and Fallout 4's upcoming "survival mode" is also a cribbing of it.

I'll have to check that out the next time I play F3. :D

I like mods that improve controls, framerate, etc. (Durante's Dark Souls fix is a godsend.)

OOoh, yes! Technical mods can be so useful. I used Optifine for Minecraft for years to fix the framerate issues and I constantly find myself wishing other games had something equivalent.
