Good shows for marathoning

(Anonymous) 2016-04-17 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Some shows I like in small doses only, like Psych. But some shows--usually the ones that have a strong throughline while still mixing it up--are ideal for binging. Doctor Who season 5, for instance, I really enjoyed mainlining, and Flash season 1.

Recommend a show that's great to watch when you have an entire weekend to blow!

Psych.

Sorry, I think I have different views on what shows are good to marathon. For me, I most enjoy marathoning shows that have a fairly consistent tone or range of tones, but that are also episodic and vary from episode to episode. So, something like Psych or X-Files. Something that's relatively serialized usually not so much.

Except for Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks is like the ultimate marathon show ever, especially since it's relatively short.

Breaking Bad. I watched all except the second half of the last season in like five days. Worth it.

Ohh this. Last spring I watched all the seasons in less than a week.

I definitely marathoned breaking bad and loved every minute of it.

Pushing daisies. Not too long, strong emotional narrative...

I don't enjoy binge-watching because I'm an awful millennial/tend to get bored with watching the same thing for long stretches. BUT I do have a comedy exception. I watched all of Umbreakable Kimmy Schmidt yesterday, and back when Netflix had them, my favorite thing to do on a weekend was put on a season of King of the Hill or Reno 911.

I watched all of Supernatural over a period of about four months. There were some eras that were really hard to get through, but I enjoyed most of it.

Seasons 1 and 2: Awesome! Cool monsters and emotional drama!
Season 3: a little rough due to the writer's strike, but still pretty damn good.
Season 4: Holy crap!
Season 5: Such angst. Very tears. Wow.
Season 6: the first half had a hilarious subplot and an annoying subplot, the second half was a mess.
Season 7: the arc was a mess but there are a lot of good episodes. Also a lot of dick jokes
Season 8: Flashback-palooza. I don't think they went one single episode without either Sam or Dean thinking at length about stuff that happened in the year of time that the show skipped because nothing interesting happened.
Season 9: This was the season I officially lost patience with angel politics.
Season 10: Mostly pretty damn good, except the last three episodes, where the writers resorted to the asspull method of ending a story arc.

I like Arrested Development and Portlandia for good background shows. There's so much going on in both shows and I've seen them both multiple times.

I can always rewatch Lost because there's the current time and then you get little side shots of each of the characters and what makes them tick.

Seconding Pushing Daisies because it's short and super whimsical.

I've never really met a show I didn't enjoy binge watching. The closest I came was that I had to take a break between seasons 1 and 2 of Hannibal because I mentally couldn't binge watch two season back to back. Other than that, I binge watch everything.

X-Files
The Wire
Jessica Jones

And it's a documentary but... Making a Murderer. So addictive.

Currently binge-watching Luther and having a blast! It's not too long (the entire show is composed by 16 episodes) so it's perfect to watch in a week-end. Also like this, Broadchurch. The first series is too good not to binge-watch!

For longer shows, maybe Breaking Bad. I had a marathon earlier this year and I watched it all in a month. Best month of my life tbh
Black Sails's good, too! Bisexual Pirates!!!

I've really been enjoying iZombie. It's really addictive. Bubblegum zombies that fly in the face of the 'gritty realism' trend, which is a relief, and very likeable characters. Also I think it has better writing than any of the Walking Deads, but then that's not much of a challenge.

Walking Dead and other graphic shows are too stressful for me to enjoy. But I'm liking iZombie.

I am also enjoying it but don't think it makes a good binge show? Watching one episode after another I'm getting frustrated with the stupid things the characters have to do to keep the "main" plot going. If I was enjoying a murder of the week (the way I watch Elementary) I wouldn't be as bothered.

How To Get Away With Murder. You pretty much have to binge-watch because the storyline plays through every episode.

Trailer Park Boys (no, I'm not the person who posted the Julian/Candy shipping secret, although I agree with it) or CSI (BEFORE Warrick died)
