It's been a long while since I saw this movie, but as far as I remember, your reasoning sounds just about right. And also what anon a few replies above said about emotional maturity.

DA. This. They both seem almost the same degree of innocent and simultaneously completely fucked up, just in slightly different ways. His closest relationship for years prior to Mathilda's arrival was a plant, he seems to have relatively little understanding of the world outside of killing people, she's pushing him for both a relationship and training as a killer out of a combination of a crush, desire for vengeance and need for his protection, and they're both so far outside the rules of normal human interaction that they both have more or less no idea what they're doing and no real functional metric to measure it against. About the only things rock solid about their circumstances are Leon's hard-coded rules about his business, Mathilda's need for vengeance, and their mutual determination to protect each other. It would never in a million years be anything less than a completely fucked up relationship, but there's no malice in it. There's no sense of predation, just a feeling of two extraordinarily fucked up people, one of whom is very, very, very underage, developing an intense reliance on each other in a very messed up situation.

Exactly. Thank you for putting it more clearly than the jumble in my head.
