Re: You know, I'm alright with the white washing...

I'm a fan of asian cinema (HK, Korea, Japan) and I have quite a few of asian actresses that I like but honestly, Kikuchi is not one of them. And I didn't like her in Pacific Rim. Everytime someone suggests her for the Major I cringe.
I actually believe that ScaJo (whom I usually don't like at all) will make a much better Major than Kikuchi (Or Shibasaki? WTF? Why Shibasaki?) would have.

I do get the sentiment of Asian people in the US about this issue. on the other hand I think it's pretty bigoted to claim to speak for actual japanese people. Asian people (of japanese descent or no) in the US face all kinds of problems that japanese people in japan don't, so it's no wonder that very many people in japan actually like the casting choice, or at least don't mind.

It's a bit like that scandal about that try-on Kimono thing at that impressionist exhibit where lots of asian americans complained that "their culture" (interestingly many of the protestants were of chinese descent) was being exploited. The problem is: this was not about asian-american culture, and the japanese people from japan do this kind of thing all the time, and didn't get what the fuss was all about because they don't feel they have to battle oppression from a white mainstream (aside from the usual US-imports supplanting local culture, food and stuff that you have everywhere to some degree)
