We are currently living through a rape epidemic, tho. I've seen the rape culture crisis described exactly as an epidemic in countless scientfic environments.

No. Even RAINN says we are not in a "rape culture" and to stop using the term. Rape (like every violent crime) is at an all time low DESPITE more people reporting.

Rape can be a serious problem that happens far too often that we need to be alarmed about... without using inapplicable language.
