Questions thread

An artist I follow on Tumblr received an ask saying how the character they drew fanart of did not look POC enough and the artist said that kind of statement is racist. What do you guys think?

I think I just don't care anymore

Did the fanart look like the character in the source material? But if it's not a visual medium, it could be more complicated. I'm remembering the Katniss racewank.

Sort of hard to determine without more details. Did they draw someone like Djimon Hounsou the skin tone of Lucy Liu? What character? How is the character portrayed in canon? What did they change to make them "less POC"?

OP

The character in question was Dick Grayson. And the anon was talking about how he wasn't tanned enough and he should be tanned since he's Romanian.

I've also seen people sent asks to artists about the OCs they've drawn being not POC enough in terms of facial features, skin tone, etc and tbh I don't know what to make of this whole discussion so that's why I asked. I hope that clarifies everything.

He isn't any more or less tan than the other bat people. Also, considering how much time those people send in suits at night, they are all way tanner than they should be.

Re: OP

He was only ever a quarter Romani and the rest white, and since most gypsies are not noticeably darker than anyone else there is no real problem. Plus he was only briefly retconned into the romani, and that has been retconned back out of existence with the start of the Nu52. Dude is currently white, again.

da. in the grayson comics, he is romanian.

But... Romanian people aren't POC? And insisting all Romanian people have to look like a caricature or an ethnic sterotype sounds kinda racists in itself?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
He means Romani, as in gypsy. And he was never more than one quarter romani (one romani grandparent) and that was based on the racist idea that to be in a circus you had to have gypsy blood.

Re: OP

DA
The OP meant Romani, not Romanian.

in this particular case, the anon is a moron. it's not racist to draw a character with the same skin tone that they have in canon (I don't think I've ever seen Dick drawn with dark skin)

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
in light of the fact that

1) Dick is pretty much always drawn with light skin (in comics/shows/films/video games)

2) he's only partially romani

3) not all romani people have dark skin in the first place

I'm going to go ahead and say that it's pretty hard to call the artist racist for this instance alone. I mean, if she was drawing a character like...idk, Cyborg with lily-white skin then that would probably be pretty racist but it's seriously reaching to say that it's racist to draw Dick with light skin since he, you know, canonically has light skin

Haha Jesus.

That sounds like they (the anons sending the asks) are trying not to be racist while being racist in a different way.
