M/F just friends tho

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I recently caught an episode of Castle (erm, spoilers?), and found myself intrigued by the premise as much as the apparent lack of a relationship between the main characters. Surprise surprise, I Googled and found out they do wind up together.

I pine for media where the woman can work alongside the man and not wind up sleeping with, marrying, and/or carrying his baby. Does this exist?

Well, it's difficult to say for certain with an ongoing show but Elementary has said repeatedly that they're committed to Joan and Sherlock remaining platonic.

Garcia and Morgan on Criminal Minds flirt but I don't think it was ever serious. Their friendship is adorable.

Don't worry she is getting fired from the show offscreen for the next series.

The only thing that comes to mind is House of Stairs, which directly calls out the trope.

I don't think Castle is a great show to expect this from, though. It was clear the showrunners were going for chemistry right from the beginning. It wasn't surprising to me that the got together early compared to other will they/won't they couples. They were already clearly into each other by season 2. I'm rewatching the show now and remembering just how much the show pushed the chemistry and attraction between them.

I always loved Nolan and Emily's relationship in "Revenge." They always treated each other like a brother/sister.

Although it's not the main focus of the show, Diane and Will from The Good Wife were very close friends who had no romantic intentions with each other (although they both have other love interests throughout the series). Hell, even when they slow danced with each other in a couple of episodes, it was done in a way that was clearly platonic and came off as adorable rather than UST-y. They had one of my favorite male/female friendships because it's made obvious that they truly love each other without being in love with each other

Not sure if you're into comedies, but 30 Rock is a great example of this. The main characters love each other very much, but it's strictly platonic.

Murphy Brown? I know two of the characters did have a thing, but Murphy never dated any of her coworkers, I thing?

Definitely Sleepy Hollow! The male and female leads are awesome friends. However, the show does go in the toilet, either in S2 or S3, depending on who you ask. I didn't think S2 was that bad, but the setup of S3 made me nope out immediately.

The Flash! The entirety of the show covers a lady and three dudes working together in a lab on fun weird science stuff. The lady and ALL three guys are attractive. She gets with none of them and unless the writers decide to REALLY fuck with the comics canon, she never will

ELEMENTARY

The two main characters actually discuss their FRIENDSHIP on numerous occasions, and the show never even once teases a possible hookup. There's even a scene in the latest season where they poke fun at people who don't know the main characters and who assume they're gonna end up together (spoiler alert: they're not gonna end up together). This is essentially the writers giving "men and women can't be friends!!!" the finger.
It's one of the best m/f friendships I've ever seen on screen.

You're welcome.
