If nothing else, it would help with the sexism arguments . . .

Well... is it better to make a villain a woman? people would then accuse Death Note of showing feminists as raging psychopaths or something. damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Honestly, I feel like Light's gender would change his role in the story. He's pigeon-holed in a role to be the best - academically successful, best schools, best jobs, everyone's expectations of a perfect kid. He doesn't have a chip on his shoulder, at least not outwardly, he doesn't really have a reason to resent the world. Considering Japan's sexism, especially when it comes to how successful they expect their male vs female youths to be, I don't think we'd see the same kind of Light Yagami.

I do think Light is gay though, in canon. But whatever frustrations he feels have to be on the inside - that's the point, because he has to keep such a perfect outward front.

Not sure if I'm explaining this right, but in essence, if Light were a girl, it'd be hard to not think that didn't directly impact her choice to become Kira, and then that'd be a different story.

L, Near, or Mello could have been women though - I don't think they had roles that would've been in any way impacted by a genderswap, I think the lives they led would have been more or less identical. Actually the first time I read the manga I thought Near and Mello were women. lol

Can you explain why you think Light is gay? To be honest, I never put much thought about the sexualities of the Death Note characters so I'm interested in this interpretation.

I agree that L, Near or Mello could have been women.

Looking back at this... I actually think the trolls around here have improved.

I never thought I'd write such a thing, but here we are.

That was 8 years ago, to be fair.

It might be the same trolls who were 14 at the time.

Or fourteen year olds who were perfectly serious...

I don't know, it's obviously low quality humor, but there's something charming in how earnest it tries to be. I feel like our trolls now are as jaded as the rest of us.

Plus, I enjoy trolling that doesn't need to rely on being as offensive as possible. Trolling about classical art is kind of funny in principle, and I would've enjoyed seeing the inevitable doofus that fell for this sort of thing and got mega outraged.
