NAYRT - The issue with Tolkein is that IMHO, he wasn't really writing a book. He was writing an epic poem in narrative form. So it wasn't reined in because that would've defeated the entire purpose... at the same time, if you're more interested in character-driven plotlines and don't really care what a mountain looks like, the book's not going to do anything for you.
That was my precise problem with LOTR; I recognized that I was holding genius in my hands, but it still wasn't what I look for in a book. Although the first one was still enjoyable.

This is actually why I like the Silmarillion better. You get all the epic worldbuilding without as much of the excess descriptions. True, the writing is pretty dry, but it is much more my cup of tea though I do like LOTR.
