Although, interestingly, Legolas is not nearly as complex as many of Tolkien's elves, mostly because he was a replacement character who was created because Tolkien needed an elf for the Fellowship who wasn't Glorfindel. The role was originally going to be played by Glorfindel, but Tolkien decided he was too powerful and would take away from Aragorn. So Legolas was a later edition and I think there are some places where it shows. This is also the reason he's never mentioned in the Hobbit. He didn't exist at that point.
But still, both of them are much more awesome in the book. I do love the movies, but they definitely missed some things with Legolas and Gimli.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-21 01:32 am (UTC)(link)That makes sense! Yeah Legolas's motivations and background were never really very well developed in the book compared to the other characters, which is a pity, but hey at least it gives more room for fans to speculate! ;)
