They tried, I'll give them that, but I still don't think they did it well until Inquisition, and I have so many other problems with Inquisition from playing it on a last gen console (yeah, yeah, I know, my fault for not having $400 to buy an Xbox One when my 360 broke a year before they announced backwards compatibility) that any ground they may have gained on handling same-sex relationships was buried under the actual mountain of salt I have towards that game.

So my criticism of their portrayal probably isn't a very fair one since I played Mass Effect after Inquisition. But let's see... I couldn't play a gay M!Shep until the third game, which I didn't find out until after I'd sacrificed Kaiden because I was already playing a character similar to him and needed Ashley on my squad more, the only other same-sex male LI starts the game mourning his dead husband and that just reeks of rebound, the gay and bi options in Dragon Age are all leaning really far towards the dark side morally gray. So it's awesome, yeah, but I have so many salty feelings towards the whole pile of things that I kind of hope Andromeda flops, even though I know that's really petty.

I can't speak for Mass Effect but I don't think the queer DragonAge characters are any more morally grey than the straight ones? I mean, Morrigan was straight and is queen bitch, while sweet Leliana was bi. And everyone is grey in DA2. Inquisition really didn't strike me that way at all,.too
