For my part, I could never begin to understand why an alien would have a sexual preference when it came to another species. He's not attracted to Shepard's body, he doesn't even know what parts of her would be considered appealing and why ("And your waist is...very supportive!" :D) But maybe it's purely theoretically preference, as in, he's uneasy being with someone he's aware is the male of their species because of taboos against such things in his own culture, even if he wouldn't be able to tell the difference himself unless a biologist pointed it out for him. That would have been an interesting question to explore in-game.
