Have you ever seen Inside Out? There's a point in the movie where the main character's personality has been completely destroyed and she just quietly sits in place. I was like that for a while, and I never want to be like that again. All that stuff about trying to get rid of desire and be at peace seems misguided to me--without desire, you become an emotionless lump like I was.

I think you're missing the point by a wide margin. I'm just not sure if it's deliberate or not.

Perhaps the point misses me. Everything meaningful in my life relates back in some way to drives and desires, and when I had no drives and desired nothing, I was like an ashen husk, dried up and ready to blow away. I guess you could say "Oh, Buddhism isn't talking about those desires," but whenever I read about Buddhist thought, it seems pretty general in the desires it wants to get rid of. (I once read a Buddhist story that portrayed the desire for a body that doesn't cause dysphoria as meaningless, because it's all ephemeral anyway, so gender identity is meaningless!)

They seek transcendent serenity of the void. You experienced numbness. That is not the same thing. It is not what they want.

I guess I don't believe that "transcendent serenity of the void" is a thing that exists. I think if you try to dig down that far, numbness is the only thing you'll ever find in the end.

So you based your opinion of a religion on a fictional, animated movie.

Lovely.
