It's probably partly a reaction to "don't just copy anime style, not even to draw anime fanart, that's too derivative, you need to use your own style" which anyone who's drawn anime style in any art class or in front of any art snob has heard at least once.

Ah yeah, I forgot that was a thing back in the day/it's still a thing to this day. Also drawing anime is something seen as childish. Or so I remember I was told back in highschool. Good times, good times.

I'm kinda torn because one side of me says that it's cool to develope your own style, but another side of me says that that doesn't mean I'm personally going to like it. Not my cup of tea, different styles and tastes, etc.

The prohibition on copying anime isn't because it's "derivative". It's because copying abstractions before understanding them causes mistakes in your original work.
