True, but in 10 years time he MIGHT still look back and cringe at the person he was...if certain things go right.

i know you might not feel like it, but if you're his teacher, could you maybe have a conversation with him about why he did it?

Oh yeah, he's by no means a lost cause. But it's just upsetting to learn.

For a lot of reasons I'm not the person to have a conversation with him about it--not least because it happened a long time ago (relatively speaking--last semester). Still, I suppose this is good practice for when nice kids do nasty shit.

Right - well fair enough. You can still be powerful influence, though, don't underestimate that.
