Polanski and Allen are both producers and therefore in charge of giving people jobs, which means they'll suck up to them.

Also... no excuses for Polanski or Allen, but they're much better film-makers (I know Allen's recent stuff's been mediocre, but he's made some great films in his time). People are much more willing to forgive the genius, or pretend that someone isn't awful if they've created stuff they admire. They shouldn't, but they do.
