I don't know if the actual tweet still exists. It might. People I follow tend not to link to actual tweets because they get deleted so often, but Rapp's pretty proud of her views, so I don't know in this case.

I can't source the lowering the age of consent. I believe it was in her thesis, or her defending her thesis on twitter, but I can't find it now.

Lowering it where from what to what? I'm not from the US, we have a pretty low age of consent and I'm quite happy about that because while on average young people here start having sex at about 17 there are enough that start around 13-14 because they *want to*, and this way there will be no criminalization. Criminalizing sex under 16 or 18 will only lead to stuff like not getting help with stds or unwanted pregnancies because it could get you boyfriend in jail if he's fucking 2 years older. In that age group that's quite common because most boys are a bit slower than girls.

So yeah, as a woman (with a daughter,I might add) I would definitely get mad if some US organization tried to pressure my country into raising the aoc to 18 or even 16. I want my daughter's sexuality to be her own to enjoy when it shows, not something regulated by the law, to be kept in check until it's "okay" to have.

A minor doing something 'because they want to' is not sufficient reason to make it legal. Children are disallowed from certain activities (or certain activities without the consent of their parents) because they are children and their brains and bodies have not fully developed yet. Nor is 'well, they'll do it anyway' a good reason to make it legal. When is that ever a good reason to make something legal??

I am from the US, and children that have sex as minors are not charged with crimes. Typically, even a sixteen year old having sex with an eighteen year old is not criminal (in most states, this varies by state) as long as the age difference is not more than two to three years.

I never said I was talking about telling other countries to raise the age of consent to sixteen or eighteen. That was something you magically came up with yourself. Additionally, pedophiles who organize in things like NAMBLA want the age of consent not lowered to fourteen, but to four or five years old. Are you saying you agree with that, or can we agree that lowering the age of consent can be a bad thing?
