The good news is that Civil War has been getting very positive reports from the advance screenings, and not just because it is in proximity to BvS as an example of a Superhero movie go horribly wrong.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The relative suckiness of BvS can only help Civil War.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The bad news is that Marvel now think it's a good time to do 'Civil War II' in the comics.

I don't think it's that big of a secret. Last I checked most people agree that Winter Soldier (and Avengers) were the good ones and everything else is charitably described as pretty people and explosions.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Critics would disagree with that. They may not be Citizen Kane but they are way more than pretty people and explosions.

Avengers 2 sucked sweaty goat balls. Civil War is basically taking a mulligan on the whole franchise.

Thor and Dark World were pretty good epic fantasy movies though.

I always saw Thor as basically being Norwegian Superman. Granted, a lot of the background details of Superman -- Krypton, etc. -- are pretty explicitly sci-fantasy.

I've never made it all the way through an MCU film. I don't get the superhero thing at all.

The actors are hot as blazes for sure, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I never really got the superhero thing, either. I only watch the movies for the effects and technology. I don't even care about the plots.

I only really enjoyed Guardians. I'm not big on the whole constant setup.

It's okay, anon. A bit of the reason I enjoy this movies is because of the delicious eye-candy.

IMO the two Cap movies are the best movies the MCU has to offer (though Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant Man come close.) Winter Soldier is basically a Metal Gear Solid movie.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't really care much for the Captain America movies. For me, it's Ant Man, the first Avengers movie, and the first Iron Man movie.

Hate the Avengers movies.

I totally agree with this comment. I think the two Captain America movies are the best for character arcs (hope Civil War will continue the trend) with Winter Soldier being totally awesome story wise. Yes to the MGS reference!
Guardians of the Galaxy was a very good action movie with feelings meanwhile Ant-Man was silly but perfect and made me love Scott Lang and his goofy gang a lot.
The other movies... eeeh... cute, but I was not particularly invested in anything else MCU has done so far. Objectively though the first Iron Man is a very good movie.

Everything I'm hearing about CW is that it's really, really good.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Winter Soldier was definitely one of the best movies in the MCU so far, but TFA was kind of lacking, imo. Part of it was just that it was an origin story, and origin stories are often less interesting in general, but the pacing was pretty wobbly, and they didn't take any real risks with it.

It looks like Civil War is following in Winter Soldier's footsteps in terms of stakes and risk-taking, but I'm worried the pacing problems will rear their heads again, especially with the sheer number of characters that are getting crammed in.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved The First Avenger! It was much more interesting to me than anyone else's first movie.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like nowadays, I seem to be one of the few fans here who actually likes the Marvel movies for the actual characters and their interaction with one another.
:/

*raises hand*

Me too!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE the Marvel films for the characters and the relationships. Sometimes the stories themselves are a bit (or a lot) predictable, but they're still well done and fun to watch. If the cast wasn't so damn good and the characters weren't (mostly, anyway) so likable I wouldn't be half as interested.

Not that the (frankly outstanding) hotness of the cast hurts...but it isn't the main reason for my attraction.

I'm with you, anon. Sure, it doesn't hurt that the actors are ridiculously attractive, but the characters, their lives and interactions and backstories and possible futures are so much better portrayed/presented than so many other movies of the type.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I've gotten soured on a few of them in fandom because of their fans, but I still like them all in canon.

I liked most of the early films and didn't really care for the sequels. I didn't even bother to watch Avengers 2, because of everything I heard about it and what it did to some of the characters I liked. However, I adored The Winter Soldier. I haven't decided if I'm going to see Civil War yet, because I'm not happy with comics things overall right now, but I do hope it is really good and continues TWS trend.
