Is this The Martian? Glad to hear the book was good.

The book was really good (I listened to the audiobook).

The book is so good (I listened to it as an audio book, before watching the movie)...

There's quite a few cuts in the movie that impact the logic of later scenes, the movie is good but it has a lot of... "huh," moments after reading the book.

Large parts of the book were terrible.

I like the post-rescue scene. But I'd also like to read the book, I'm just worried (exacerbated by this secret) that I'll compare them and like one or the other 'less'. :/

I've read the book and my husband hasn't. After the film he said to me "I enjoyed it but it felt like something was missing, there was barely any peril once he left in the rover" - too right there was barely any peril, they cut out him screwing his own comms and also rolling the rover in a crater! The film definitely felt like it was going somewhere with the latter and it just...didn't happen.

I don't think it's a bad film but I enjoyed the book more.

Yeah I wish I'd seen the movie first, and then read the book. Actually, I feel this way about all book adaptions - watch first, then read. It stops me from feeling weirdly cheated.

I'm reading The Martian right now!

The book's worth reading, then? I enjoyed the movie in a popcorn sort of way, but only if I pretended I didn't see all the problems with it. That's what comes of growing up reading Golden Age sf, I suppose.

Fingers crossed for the book; I'm going to get it despite the movie!

Guess I'm watching the movie before reading the book then.

Oh man, saw the movie with a friend who exposed us to the book via audio--really need to pick up that book. Enjoyed the movie, but I admit, towards the end when dude was suffering major malnutrition, it was getting psychologically difficult for me. Still glad I saw it though!

I'm fine with saying "that's your opinion" on most of this, but you're flat-out wrong about the post-rescue scene. The movie would've been open-ended in a dumb way without it.
