That would be cool.

I'd like that a lot. Not to be trite but it would be a simpler time with simpler tech in which Superman's morality and conflicts would fit a lot better than 2016.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I could live with that, it would solve so many of the problems the current movies have regards how Superheroes interact with technology and modern social constructs. There is the issue of America's cowardice when it comes to engaging with the Nazis though, even the European powers got over appeasement and isolationism long before we did and something set in the 1930s and 40s would have to explain why Superman was as much a coward as we were.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The Nazis used magic and/or superpowers

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is the internal logic of things that are clearly dramatic artifices inherent to the genre so important?

actually asking
loracarol: (THAT SMILE OKAY)

[personal profile] loracarol 2016-04-23 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That actually is explained in canon, with the Spear of Destiny.

The spear used to pierce the side of Jesus Christ has had many different owners throughout the years. The most pivotal role the Spear had came in World War II as it fell into the hands of Adolf Hitler. The control of the Spear by the Third Reich prevented American superheroes, particularly those with magic-based origins or powers (and in the pre-Crisis Earth-Two reality, the Golden Age Superman), from intervening in the War, creating a Sphere of Influence that would affect such heroes to fall under Hitler's sway when they enter into it.

So, yeah, Hitler had a magic spear that could turn superheros into Nazis if they got to close to him. Silly, but not the stupidest thing I've ever read in comics lmao. |D

A few people here already mentioned Nazi magic/Spear of Destiny etc., so if the theoretical 1930's Superman film had to address Nazis, it could.

But here's my zany idea: don't fucking address them. Don't make the movie THAT historically faithful. Get the architecture and some of the less racist 30's slang right, have some made-up supervillain stand in for Hitler if they wanna do some sequels with the Hugo Boss uniforms and fucking leave the topic alone.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
yeah make it more of a 1930's AU without nazi's

superhero stories love alternative universes

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be amazing. Unfortunately it seems to be completely opposite to what the DC movie people are trying to do. And I'm not sure who out there is really trying to make that kind of movie in general, except for Joe Johnston, bless his heart, and he's in with the Marvel crowd.

But man, just imagining it, it could be so good. Get Kurt Busiek or something to consult on it, just go to town.

You might enjoy the novel It's Superman? Yeah, it's not a movie, but it does the whole "Superman in the 1930s" thing in a pretty fun way...
loracarol: (nekkid people are funny)

I was also going to recommend that!

While I don't think a movie of it is going to happen any time soon (to my annoyance), maybe someday the animation division of DC will give it a shot, like they did with New Frontier. Personally, I really do like their animated movies, and I think It's Superman! would be an interesting piece. :O

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything to wash away Snyder and Goyer's bullshit. I adore this idea. Imagine if the Fleischer Studios had done an animated Superman feature along with their shorts. It would have blown Snow White out of the water!

I'd watch the shit out of that.

I can't stand the idea of grimdark Superman. You actually need to be creative to make Superman work, and this would be a way to do that.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Lois and Clerk is still the oonly adaptation that even got near to being a good Superman adaptation. They should learn from that.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I want ALL the modern takes on Golden Age/Dieselpunk/Film Noir superhero movies. Batman:TAS and the dark deco aesthetic have so much to answer for during my formative years.

It'd probably never happen, but if the Wonder Woman movie is done right it might pave the way for more period pieces.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
To do it right they'll need to have a Wonder Woman played by an actress who doesn't believe in killing kids.

!!!!

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-04-23 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This so much.

Also I want him to be characterized more like the Supes of that era (aka. a huge dick).

BvS would have been SO MUCH BETTER.

Re: !!!!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
He wasn't a dick. He was a progressive bad-ass (who was a teeny bit sexist but that was the era, like it or not.) Superman got shit done and didn't worry about anyone's feelings. The ends justified his means.

Re: !!!!

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-04-23 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No, he was definitely a dick in his Superman versus Batman era, and he was fully a dick to Jimmy Olsen like... always lol. But then the Batman of that era was also a dick.

I can't remember if that started in the 40's now though...

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Eugh, that's the part I DON'T want. I don't give a damn about making him act just like his golden-age version (what the fuck purpose would that serve? The whole problem with superhero movies nowadays IS that they're such giant dicks, why would anyone want another drop in the bucket), I just want the setting, with 30s-era technology and aesthetics for the villain whosoever s/he may be, because that's where Supes' appearance and identity shtick and supporting cast, like being a newspaper reporter etc, would work best. (Golden Age-style Lois would be amazeballs though).

But ah well, I can always trust you to miss the whole point of an idea and twist it into idiocy.

Re: OP

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-04-24 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
No, in this case you're the idiot. Those comics were fun specifically because of how weird and petty and dickish the early relationship between those characters was. The constant one-upmanship and bickering was hilarious and would be refreshing compared to what we actually got.

Besides, other than Tony Stark, please name a current movie incarnation of a superhero that is "a giant dick".

If you say Deadpool, I'm going to assume that it's actually you missing the point.

I never knew how much I wanted this until now, but I must have it.
