Fuck this week and FUCK 2016 for taking so many people from us. Chyna, Prince, Doris Roberts... Poor Patton Oswalt lost his wife. Even celebrity spouses aren't safe. This is terrifying and there's no logical explanation but it being a sick coincidence.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The coincidence is just that all those people are celebrities. It's not a coincidence that so many people have died, in general.

http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-36108133 BBC looks into the perceived higher death rate. Conclusion is baby boomers and some upper Gen Xers starting to die out combined with greater scope for who can be a celebrity -- so if there's more famous people, that's more famous people who're going to die.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get this attitude. Not that celebrities can't have "meaning" to people but unless you had a ticket to see Prince live then I don't get how this actually affects you. Celebrity lives aren't any more important than the other people that die every day, this faux outrage that so many celebrities are being "taken from us" creeps me the fuck out.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
DA... Even if you didn't have a ticket to his show, you could still be a fan and feel sad that you'll never get to see a show of his again. It's not the current inconvenience that people are feeling, it's the fact that an entertainer who meant something to them is now gone forever.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
" unless you had a ticket to see Prince live then I don't get how this actually affects you"

Um, what? If you're a fan, of course it affects you. You listen to the music, you made a connection with it. You grieve at the thought of this person no longer being able to create something you enjoy, but more importantly, you grieve at the fact that, whether or not you were strangers, they still affected your life in some way.

I don't understand the attitude that "they're a celebrity, therefore you shouldn't be sad at their death." That's just callous.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
They already created the thing you like them for, it's not going anywhere. Whether they are alive or dead doesn't change that.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

If you don't get it, you just don't get it, I guess. And that's sad.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
It's not about "the thing they created."

Seriously. You don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
So... you're upset that they won't make any more stuff to entertain you. hmm.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Way to ignore the rest of the post.

The tragedy of the fact they are no longer around to make new stuff is that they are no longer around.

uhhhhh

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, if people can cry about Bambi's Mom who's just a bunch of painted plastic in a high tech flip book, they can be sad about a real people. Come on, this is FANDOM secrets. That's like... human nature 101 that people get attached to fictional characters and celebs.

...Really?

Have you never experienced someone who had an impact on your life suddenly not being there anymore? Even if was as simple as "Oh, my fashion sense was inspired by them" someone you looked up to/drew inspiration from is not there, and never will be again.

If you honestly don't understand, my sympathies.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
uhhh yes?

The point isn't that no one can feel down about celebrities dying, it's this outrage that "2016 IS TAKING EVERYONE AWAY" and faux extreme sadness and ultimately making it all about you when you don't even fucking know the person. And acting like their deaths are somehow more newsworthy than the millions of non-privileged people dying around the world every day. I find it borderline offensive.

[personal profile] dancingmouse 2016-04-24 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh okay, because it sounded like you were confused as to why people are sad about people they don't even know dying.

My apologies.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, please.

No, their deaths are not more newsworthy than others, but the truth of the matter is, you're more likely to have been affected by a celeb than someone halfway across the world whom you've never heard of. Doesn't make their death more or less important. If they die, of course you'll feel sad, but unless you connected with something involving them or their work at some point, you'll probably move on to the next thing and forget.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here.

You're so wrong it's kind of sad. Chyna, beyond being a really nice human being, represented so much in the way of showing that women could be more than eye candy.

I'd go so far as to say that if there was no Chyna, there would be no Rhonda Rousey or Gina Carrano or any interest in female fighting sports or female wrestlers in general. She was the first, and she took so much shit and abuse for it from the general public...

Chyna being Chyna affected pop culture and broke barriers.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Considering I never argued that this person wasn't significant I don't really have much to be "so wrong" about.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Then if you don't "get" how that affects people, you're either a moron or purposefully being a piece of shit.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao someone did not read what they were replying to

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad that you've never had a time in your life that the works someone has created have been a lifeline. Below it is mentioned that the works are still there. Yes, they are. But the person who created them is no longer on this plane. They are never going to make more music/movies/whatever.

I know not everyone feels this way, but for the celebrities I like, it's like losing a friend. Someone who seemed to understand you, even if it was all in your head and you would never, ever meet them in a million years.

Some people can't form connections with people who aren't right there in person, and that's okay. But some people can and do. It's just like some people are introverts, others are extroverts. Or some people like cilantro and others don't.

Music has saved my life. When my musical heroes leave it will affect me profoundly.
