To each their own. I loved most of what you mentioned from the start (Steven Universe grew on me after four episodes, and I've never read DaMFA or EGS, so I can't comment on them), but if it's not for you, it's just not for you.

I love every canon episode of Steven Universe except for "House Guest," including the episodes a lot of people say are shit you need to suffer through. That's why I get so mad about this "it gets better" stuff in regard to Steven Universe. All the things people dislike about the early episodes are still present to some degree in the later episodes, and there are entire episodes like "Historical Friction" or "Sadie's Song" that are in an early-episode style. I can't help but think "Are you still 'suffering through' all those jokes and silly moments in the new episodes just to get to the stuff you like?"

I guess for me, SU was one of those cases where I like the early episodes now, but was really turned off by the first couple when I originally saw them (I got hooked again at the end of Season 1, and then went back and rewatched the earlier stuff.) I guess for me, the stuff I didn't like did get better, but it wasn't the silly, jokey stuff, it was the aesthetics. Specifically, the artwork/animation has evened out and Steven doesn't shout all his lines anymore (and the VA's voice changed, so Steven's voice has mellowed and is less shrill). Knowing where it's going makes the earlier stuff a better watch for me, because I can focus more on the jokes and plot and backstory instead of on the stuff that I initially found irritating.

I feel steven grew as a character from an unlikeable shit to an optimistic little guy. I understand how they started him where he was and how they justified where he ended up. But when you were just watching that first episode, you are thinking "holy shit Rebecca left adventure time for this?"

That makes sense. Usually when I think of shows that I like that "got better," it wasn't that I actively disliked the early episodes, but that I found them mediocre or boring, and it took a while for the series to grow on me. Like Steven Universe started out as a cute but fairly standard monster-of-the-week kids' show, and it wasn't until later when it started to show some more depth that it really grabbed me. So to me, "it gets better!" doesn't mean "please, force yourself past these things you actively hate in order to get to The Good Stuff" but more like "I know this doesn't seem like anything special but JUST WAIT."

About the only exception I can think of is Parks and Rec - I'd written it off after disliking the first season episodes I saw, and only tried again after many people told me how great it became - but that show is well-known for doing a total 180 on overall quality, so.

I loved SU from the pilot. The first episode proved that what I loved from the pilot was still there, though I didn't care for the look change at first.

I will say that I rewatch later episodes more, but they wouldn't have been the same without the build up from the early episodes. The way that they reveal little bits of the world and the characters along the way made everything mean so much more in the more Shit Is Going Down episodes.
