I told myself to try this once, and if I didn't try, I would give up and kill myself. That let me calm down and steel my resolve. The potential reward of a complete and total cessation of pain and suffering if I failed was enough to lure me forward.

That uh, may not be the best tack to take though...thinking of loved ones helps sometimes. "I have to do this, I want to make X proud of me!" can be encouraging.
