I feel like I'm way too old to be asking this, but what's the difference between softcore and hardcore porn? I don't get it at all.

Same meaning that softcore and hardcore always have. Hardcore is more extreme.

I'd think softcore porn as something you might see in a rated R movie - two people "having sex" but you probably aren't actually going to see the genitals, cumshots, etc. And it'll probably pretend to be somewhat tasteful. Hardcore porn, you'd see everything, in all its sweaty glory. Plus, hardcore would imply to me something a lot kinkier and dirtier feeling.

Boobs & nipples are not genitals.

That said, I would say that if you see penetration, it's hardcore. If everything is simulated, it's softcore. Note that this is purely a live-action distinction. In other kinds of erotica, you can go back & forth over the line.

People think you implied because that's what you did. It may have been unintentional on your part, but when ayrt mentions genitals, you referenced boobs and nipples right away. People are misunderstanding you because you didn't express yourself very well.

To echo what the others are saying, softcore is basically what you can get away with in an R-rated film. Nudity is okay (though lingerie is part of it, too), and sex can be shown, but not in detail.

Hardcore is more explicit. Actual, direct shots of the vagina/clitoris/labial folds, erect penis, penetration, etc.

This. Simple enough.Hardcore is real sex. Softcore is fake sex with more storyline. I enjoy both but softcore can be hotter because it has more story. My favorite hardcore porn tries to tell a story too.
