This is not weird, your friend simply is someone who has never seen it before and it got their back up.

I have to dilute juice myself, because I get heartburn if I drink too much sugar (or drink something sweet right after eating something sugary too). Some juices are just too strong to drink straight, so a bit of water cuts down that strength and saves my chest.
