Shipping wars, mostly.

And rape apologists (and no I'm not radfem!anon). I can live with fucked -up ships, it's the people who pretend it's all fluffy and romantic that annoy me.

I feel like the show itself does enough rape apologism/disregard that it's hard to know where to stand. Because an aggravatingly OTT action written badly can be hand-waved for the purpose of enjoying the intended tone of the show, but then there are fans who deny that was bad writing/think it wasn't actually rape, and it's a mess.

The fandom is half the reason I quit the show. It's one of the most toxic fandoms I've ever been in tbh.

Quitting a show because the fandom is toxic just seems strange to me. I noped out of Supernatural fandom a couple of years back (and judging by the secrets that are posted here? Totally the right call) but I still watch the show.

Probably because the fandom is a big part of the experience for most people. If I like something I usually want to look up fandom content and discussion which leads you smack dab right into fandom. If you are completely satisfied just watching the show and never touching fandom then more power to you, but the pros of fandom (meta, fanart, fic, discussion) outweigh or equal the cons.

AYRT

Like I said, it was half the reason. The other half was the show took a nosedive imo in S2, and all of my (few) favorite characters were already getting written out or ignored. It was becoming less of an ensemble and more The Charmpelmills Family Hour, and since none of those main players were my favorites, I turned to fandom where there were more ideas/art/headcanons/fic for the characters I did like. But then too many people, including those I followed, started arguing about ships or which characters were "worth" screen time and which ones weren't, and when you're not a fan of certain characters or pairings that are the favorites, and almost no one you follow tags anything for you to blacklist the things you don't want to see, it just got overwhelmingly annoying to where I couldn't even stand the sight of certain characters anymore.

It all got magnified. Mild annoyance turned to disgust. I can also say the OUAT fandom is the only one I've ever been called the C word in, and only because I didn't ship one of the main (canon) pairings. So I really didn't feel any reason to stick around with all of that going on. And now I hear the show has gone in more directions I couldn't care less about so I have no desire to pick the show back up.

This is pretty much my exact experience: increasing lack of focus on my favs + abusive comments on my blog for not worshipping Regina = getting the hell out of dodge. Every now and then I hear what's been going on in the show and I'm SO thankful I left when I did.

Agreed. Considering how batshit insane the Captain Swan people were/are and how they GLEEFULLY GLOATED at getting their ship in the face of Neal's death, REALLY pissed me the fuck off.

Sure, there were a few that were humble and were sorry that Neal had to die, but the majority? Fuck those fuckers.

It was a combination of them AND Neal dying that made me quit.

Probably because the show is so bad now we don't have anything else to talk about.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The tumblr kiddies happened.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
In this case, I do think the show itself has to answer for at least half of it. Uneven writing, divisive characterisation and a merrily revolving morality system have at least something to do with the way the fandom turned out, I'd say.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
My friend tried to get me into it when I was visiting her. The first few episodes did look good/interesting, but by then I'd already seen on Tumblr how much of a narrative/characterization mess it was, so I never bothered to watch any more.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, season 1 is a nice solid show, I'd say watch it and pretend it ended there, or for anyone who gets into it, watch through the mid-season 3 finale. There're some issues, but back when lots of the fandom thought they'd be dealt with in season 2, OUAT fandom was a pretty awesome place to be. (Also, much as I loathe Hook, he's more a symptom than the sole cause of the show's decline.)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I feel so sorry for Colin. It's so obvious from his interviews that this is NOT the Hook he signed on to play.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It's literally a show designed for grown-ass adults who never left their Disney phase behind, but who want to feel dark and edgy.

Given that, I can't imagine a GOOD fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
90% of the fandom left because the writing of the show sucks, and there's a big chunk of fandom that sticks around for fanworks and meta and either doesn't watch the show at all or regards it solely as gif and AU fodder. And honestly if you're not a Hook, Hook/Emma, or Disney cross-promotion du jour fan, there's not much reason to watch at this point.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
They brought in Hook and fandom started riding his dick.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I make gratuitous use of blocking tags and people and it's made my enjoyment of the fandom much better. I've had some really good experiences in my little corner, but I know there are some definite BAs

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I stay away from everything but my own ship's tag, blacklisted everything related to characters I hate, and I've blocked half of my fellow shippers for good measure. My little corner of OUAT fandom is filled with sunshine and unicorns now.
