[Sword of Truth]

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The series lost me with their sexy dominatrix characters torturing the hero with their magic dong-sticks. I just felt like I was trapped in the author's weird sex fantasy at that point.

Wait...wasn't there a TV show about that? I think my dad watched it.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Legend of the Seeker, I think? It's based on Sword of Truth but I don't know how closely. I couldn't bring myself to watch it despite recs, because the book series was a mess.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not very closely at all, by all accounts. It's mostly Sam Raimi taking it and turning it into a Sam Raimi adventure show.

Also it has a ridiculously hot cast.

Basically, the only thing the series kept was the names of the characters, some abilities, and that was it. The plot and even the characters were fairly different.

Yeah I only read the first book and that was the part when I realized this was... not my type of fantasy. sex fantasy or otherwise.

plus it was so random. main character suddenly gets kidnapped three quarters through the book by a dominatrix who has wild torture sex with him constantly.

that, tied with the banning fire = banning guns metaphor, and the fact that he killed his brother (for great justice) at the end but not sexy dominatrix lady who raped and murdered loads of people, just.. no thanks.

No. They are very bad fantasy novels. Partly because they still have elements of the shit that becomes more prominent later on. Partly because they're just... really not very well-written, in increasingly clear ways after the very first one.

Taste is subjective but you have to draw a line somewhere for God's sake. I am glad that you enjoy them but they are wretched as fantasy novels go.

I stuck with the series until Pillars of Creation. The general shittiness of the writing in that one got to the point where I could no longer ignore it--it's a book, ostensibly aimed at an adult audience, written at a grade-school level.

"Taste is subjective, until it's not"

(Full disclosure I've never read SoT and have no interest in doing so. Just...either it's subjective or it isn't)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-26 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, have to agree. Concepts aren't bad, but they also aren't terribly original, and execution is meh. The early books look fantastic compared to the later books, but that's not saying a whole lot because the later books suggest the author has gone completely off his nut.

I admit to keeping Wizard's First Rule on my bookshelf somewhere, because it started off with so much potential, but everything after that, nope. Granted, OP, you do have a point that prior to book 4 it wasn't complete shit, but books 2-4 have the exact same formula as all the rest: Richard and Kahlen decide to do a thing together, Richard and Kahlen are pulled apart, he narrative bends over backwards to try to convince you that this separation is forever and they'll both die, oh look not only did they not die but they are joyfully reunited. In between there is some really skeevy torture, and most characters recover far too easily from it. I just couldn't with every single book being the exact same story just in different locations.

I don't remember which book it was, but I stopped at the one that was very clearly all about how Communism is Very Evil and I Will Show You Why. I'm actually pretty anti-communist, but when I read a fantasy novel, I want, y'know ... fantasy. Somewhere.

I only heard about this series because of the TV show, Legend of the Seeker. I have a weakness for that show; it's fun, full of eye-candy (Both the cast, Bridget Regan being absolutely gorgeous, and the scenery) and an easy watch. I miss it a lot; (as far as I know) there's nothing else like it on TV right now.

Never read the books, though. Heard they were quite different (Not in a positive way either) and didn't have any great urge to experience the source material, but I'm glad they exist so LOTS does too.

I just watched The Shannara Chronicles and that reminded me a lot of Legend of the Seeker if you were interested in a new fantasy adventure show.

Ooo, I've been rec'd that show before, but I know very little about it. Maybe I should check it out.

Thank you! I'll keep it in mind.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-26 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Please don't. The Shannara Chronicles are soooo bad. I managed to watch a few episodes of LOTS, but I couldn't even get through the pilot of Shannara Chronicles. So. Bad.

Aww. Well, if you didn't like LOTS then our tastes might just be different! That said, you could be right too. Who knows.

Frankly though, I've seen some pretty bad pilots. Teen Wolf was boring, but I stuck it out and greatly enjoyed the first couple of seasons despite the flaws. I just watched the pilot of Shadowhunters, and tbh I didn't find that pilot exactly impressive, but I liked it enough to decide I'd give it a shot. If it's somewhat entertaining and has potential then I'm usually okay with finishing at least a couple of episodes.

Sorry you didn't like it, though! It happens.

I loved the show. I liked a lot of the characters of the books, but overall the series wasn't that great to me. I did enjoy the first handful of books, though, so I can see why you liked them as well.
