Does anyone really care that much about different interpretations, honestly? Like, does it really matter to the overall fictional universe one way or the other? It's not like there was tons of action and dialogue from which we could draw definite conclusions - in fact there's very little of that in the Silmarillion in general due to its narrative style - which means there's a lot of wiggle room when it comes to most characters in it, especially minor ones.

(Also IMO when it comes to the Silmarillion I'm of the opinion that fans can always go uber-Watsonian and claim that hey, not all old documents written by elves that have been cobbled together and translated and re-translated and edited and re-edited are reliable.)

That's kind of the point, isn't it? The Silmarillion isn't true history, it's mythology, with the inherent inconsistencies and re-imaginings of such.

Yeah lol, Tolkien was very firm about making characters names actually derive properly from the etymology of the language he had created already, even when the name wound up sounding stupid to English-speaking ears. Like, Celeborn's name in Quenya is "Teleporno" because "Celeb" = silver, "orne" = tree in Sindarin, and "Teleporno"= the way the words for "silver" and "tree" works in that kind of compound noun in Quenya.

Though to be fair, the whole "goth" movement didn't even exist back when Tolkien wrote it, so...

Yeah... when it comes to followers of Morgoth not enjoying being evil, I am more inclined to think the best candidate would be OC humans, not any of the Dark Maiar/Balrogs, especially not the few who were named.
