Re: Theatrical Cut vs Director's Cut/Extended Edition

The theatrical cut also has those awful voiceovers, which were just about literally phoned in from Harrison Ford. He didn't want to do it and had been promised he wouldn't have to do it, and yet it happened anyway due to studio insistence and he was pissed.

Final Cut is the real movie.

The voiceovers don't bother me. They're a little corny but also pretty noir-ish.

I'd like them better if Ford didn't sound so completely uninterested.

The movie's better without, though.

I think that lends itself to the whole noir feeling, and also the idea that he might be (is?) a 'skinjob' himself. His emotional responses are kind of fucked up. I like them both.

He most certainly is, but I feel the unicorn dream and Gaff's origami are a more subtle indication of that.

Sometimes it's okay not to have a voiceover for film noir. They can't all be Marlowe stories.

I own the Director's Cut (which I love); I'm not sure I've seen the Final Cut. What's the difference between the two?

The Final Cut is basically a definitive Director's Cut. Ridley Scott actually had very little to do with the Director's Cut, and the Final Cut was him going back and doing it the way he wanted. In addition to a full-scale digital remaster (including the film brightened to reveal more details,) several of the special effects were cleaned up to look better, a better job was done on a few dubbed lines (including Bryant's "four skin jobs" line) so they're less obviously dubbed, Zhora's death scene was actually re-shot, and a lot of continuity errors and goofs were removed. There's a bunch more, but it's basically what the Director's Cut should have been but probably couldn't due to the technology at the time.

I treasure my copy.
