Sam is buying Dean a bottle of whiskey for his fiftieth birthday. What does he get him?

It sounds like he's getting him a bottle of whiskey. Is this a trick question?

This made me laugh very hard.

The real answer, in terms of what they would do on the show, is they would probably have it just be some kind of premium variant of Jim Beam or Jack Daniels.

The real answer, of what they would do if they were real, is probably something that I wouldn't know because it'd be some real small distillery small batch stuff.

What I would do if I was writing it would be something like Old Grandad 114 (because I really like Old Grandad) or Elijah Craig or something like that.

I'm kinda stuck on the whole "Dean Winchester manages to make it to fifty" concept, but what about the same stuff (Johnny Blue, I think they said?) that Bobby won from Rufus in the bed?) That would be a nice callback..

I meant, won in the BET.

(Winning it from him in bed would make it a WHOLE different kind of fic.)

Johnnie Walker Blue Label is about $200/bottle, FYI.

Entirely depends on the kind of whisky. Are we talking Scotch or Bourbon? What age? Single malt or blend? Peated or more on the mild side?

(A popular single malt scotch would be a 14-18 years old Glenfiddich - that's a price range between ~$42 -$75, I guess)

What they said up there - Johnny Walker Blue. Nice call-back to Bobby (and Rufus) and something we've seen in-show that they know and enjoy. Considering Dean's nearly killed himself drinking, and Sam doesn't really drink all that much, I doubt he'd go for some kind of out-there imported brand, and might very possibly be limited to what a store in Lawrence, Ks, would carry (unless you've moved them out of the state).

Lawrence is a college town (my dad actually lived there for a few years while he was attending the University of Kansas) so they probably could get a fairly wide booze selection there.

Yeah, but college kids are broke a lot. When we lived near there, it was pretty laid-back hippy/intellectual/pagan oriented (early nineties)- none of those people have money, either, and tend to 'buy local' with devotion.

Of course, Dean at fifty is almost twenty years from now, so who knows!

(Lawrence is an awesome town, I wish they could show a glimpse of the boys shopping for groceries there on the regular or something, heh.)
