The point being that there is a difference between the creators knowing what kind of parings that a certain subset of the fangirls goes gaga over, and the creators actually portraying these pairing as a reality within the story. I'd buy the portrayal of makoharu as romantic if not for the Sidney episode (complete w. hilarious sharing of bed), if not for everything that is Rin and Rei across both seasons, if not for the biggest relationship development of ES, which happens between Haru and Sousuke in the bloody extra episode. Makoto and Haru's wonderful friendship isn't a subtly portrayed same-sex romance, it's fanservice.
