What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
And their ""Hypocracy"" with their "Dude a day" newsletter?

Context?

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Buzzfeed are big into the feminist philosophy and have been very openly critical of objectification and, well, they've been very much on the feminist side of the war on women. Some people have a problem with them now showcasing nude and semi-nude men for titillation.

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
is there a context for why you misspelled hypocrisy

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

Not OP. But I'd guess mistakes happen?

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

They're big on being clickbait. That's what Buzzfeed is about. They post stuff that objectifies men because a bunch of people will click on it to ogle at the pictures, and a bunch more people will click on it to go rant in the comments about how they'd never get away with making posts like that about women.

And they don't need to make posts like that about women because there are already loads of sexy/naked women websites, so people aren't going to go to Buzzfeed for that.

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I do think it's kind of hypocritical to objectify men six ways from Sunday while decrying objectification of women, but I mean, I don't hate them for it.

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Do they decry objectification of women as such? Not in the context of gender inequities, but just objectification on its own?

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I see how hard they push gender posts as a tacit decrying. They're not saying "OBJECTIFYING WOMEN IS BAD! READ THIS POST ABOUT IT!!" But they are saying "Look at how great women are! Look at the shitty time women have! This is why life isn't fair for women!!"

And it all boils down to the same point of "We care about things that happen to women, but we don't care about not propagating the same thing with men."

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
With respect that seems like it's kind of unrelated to the initial question, about whether or not it's hypocritical of them to objectify men. It really doesn't have any relation at all. Could you explain a little more about where you're coming from?

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand what you don't understand, so no. This is boring now.

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well apparently it's not a legally defensible standpoint after the Hulk VS Gawker debacle, but I'm of the opinion that objectification is a product of systematic sexism, so men can't be objectified since no matter how much you try to reduce them to their looks society will still value them in any way these men choose. Even Oiled up, stripped naked and chained to a bed, these men still have all the power in the situation.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a man and I kind of agree to be honest? Individual men might be exploited or objectified but it doesn't really happen as a whole. Also who cares.

I'm a woman, and I think AYRT is full of shit.

K but as long as this exists I see no problem when it is a girl depicted in the same way. If we can have one, we can have the other.

Of course, I come from the standpoint of "Objectify everything!" (everything is somebody's fetish)

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
but like

women have been objectified like that way longer and more already?

they're just trying to make it equal

I don't think there's such a thing as making something retroactively equal. At some point you either have to decide something is OK or it isn't. And if it is, it needs to be OK for everyone going forward. And if it isn't, it needs to not be OK for anyone, going forward.

Yep. It's a little more objectivist then I tend to go, but A is A. It is good, or it is bad. Context of "when" is irrelevant.

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
This whole thread reminds me of that failtastic feminist group in my city who went around slapping huge stickers with "sexist bullshit" and "sexist objectification" on advertisements with women showing a bit more skin. And they did it for advertising posters of a swimwear/bikini brand. Like... how are they supposed to advertise their stuff?

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I try not to think about Buzzfeed at all.

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care about that stuff specifically but I've never cared for buzzfeed in general.

Re: What do you think about buzzfeed

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
If they're against all sexiness, then yes? If they're not, then they're just trying to please their demographic? Honestly I don't think you get to be mad about that unless they're attacking people for showing sexy pics.

But also context does matter. I mean, are you showing cute guys in mostly appropriate pics, maybe slightly NSFW, that aren't coercive or, like, torture porn? Then what's the problem? Lots of sites show women like that and aren't disgusting. The ones that are disgusting are using women to sell literally everything, treating them like objects instead of pretty people to look at, etc.

Come on, you know there's a difference. Use your judgment. Does this situation apply to that or not?
