I'm similar. I was much more interested in Remus and Snape than Harry and the trio. But I also don't really care about them as kids. I want to know about their faculty meetings and them fighting Voldermort, and then what happened afterwards. I don't care about that with Harry and the others.

You make me want to finish one of my unpublished WIPs.

Do it! Do it!

Oh, I ADORE Haymitch and Effie! Definitely MY favorite parts of Hunger Games. ^_^

Same. McGonagall was my favourite. I mean, she was badass, way smarter and more sensible than everyone else, and she could turn into a cat. I want to be her when I grow up.

*McGonagall fistbump!*

I don't think this is always the case for me but I do know with Harry Potter I was more interested in Remus and McGonagall than anyone else.

I 100% feel the same way.

I've always wondered if the "side characters are more interesting than the main characters" phenomenon isn't a result of authors trying to make their protag(s) as widely relatable as possible for marketing reasons, to the detriment of individuality, whereas they don't need to worry about appealing to as many people with the side characters, so they feel free to make them more unique.

Well this is why I don't read YA? adolescence is really not something I want to relive. Fandom is really focused on firsts, a lot of fic is stylistically similar to YA.
I read a lot of fanfic but this is why I read other things as well.

It's not that surprising.

I think part of that might be that minor characters have some mystery to them. Sometimes, the more detail you get about something, the less interesting it becomes. You get to fill in the blanks. And if you have issues with the author's writing, you'll of course have less issues with a character that isn't written about as much.
