It can be both. Self-sacrifice can happen for different reasons depending on the person.

I do agree with this. It depends on the situation. But I also agree with the secret maker in the case of Harry. In Harry's case I do find it noble and I understand why it bugs them.

I can't agree or disagree. Deathly Hallows (I presume that's the one's events we're talking about?) was such a snorefest for me I barely remember what happened in it.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You just thought you'd chip in on the obvious general nature of self-sacrifice?
blitzwing: ([magi] drakon)

[personal profile] blitzwing 2016-04-28 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
DA. Give it a rest. Hateboners are boring and pathetic.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
Please don't comment on things you either don't remember or don't really have any insight on.

If you don't like my comments, you don't have to read them.

I dunno, it always bothers me when characters are too willing to sacrifice themselves. I think it's selfish.

How does that makes sense? both in general, and in terms of Harry (where it is obvious, via the huge prophecy plot device, that he absolutely HAS to in order to defeat Voldy, and there is no other way)?

Sometimes it's selfish when they're not thinking of how much it will hurt the people who care about them and they're focusing on wanting to do what they think is right without considering the opinions of other people. I don't think that means there can't be other things that make the decision understandable though. But I don't see selfishness as an unforgivable sin while most people act like it is, so when I say something is selfish it's probably not coming across to other people the way it does to me.

I wouldn't say Harry's case fits this though.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
yeah. lacking self-worth to the point where you hold no regard for the feelings/opinions of your loved ones absolutely is selfish (in a bad way, imo).

i wouldn't say that applies to harry either, though!

I liked how they discussed this in xXxHolic, tbh, with Watanuki's propensity for self sacrifice.

You know, before xXxHolic got weird.

I don't really think you can label it universally either noble or unhealthy in every case. Plus I'd say it can have aspects of both even in a single case. I just don't think it's this simple.

Can't a sacrifice also be suicidal? In technical terms, it was; Harry had no idea he would survive and mentally prepared himself to die. I don't think he was suicidal in the sense that he was actively wanting to die, but he was beaten down and tired and ready to do anything to stop the bloodshed.

Now I'm getting all emotional.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought that it was acceptance. He wasn't happy about it, but he finally accepted that it was his destiny.

Which, actually, I suppose could be him beaten down...

I think they are, in this case, very much two sides of the same coin

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
In any case, I absolutely adore it. It's one of my favorite scenes in the entire series.

I guess that's kind of dark. LOL!

Huh. I've never heard anyone argue it was suicidal.

It was pretty obvious in the text that Harry didn't want to die.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I thought so too?
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-04-28 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, people are saying it was suicidal? How?
ibbity: (Default)

[personal profile] ibbity 2016-04-29 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Like people above are saying, sacrificing yourself for the sake of others can be noble and brave AND be a sign of mental illness or suicidal feelings. But I don't believe that the latter applies to Harry either. His whole intention was to save others, he didn't WANT to die. And he wasn't mentally ill that I could tell either.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally not the point, and I in no way hate James or anything, but it still astonishes me the guy has fans, he is literally dead for the whole series. That is some impressive work on Rowling's part.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, but people do this for Buffy too regarding The Gift, so unfortunately it doesn't surprise me.
