(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)So, Disney is hedging their bets by genderswapping the Ancient One and then picking a androgynous actress to play them (since the Ancient One is sort of supposed to be this person that transcends time and space.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)But, first, I think having the "Wise Asian Master" stereotype would be less bad than having Tilda Swinton.
Second, there's absolutely nothing pegging them to using the precise set-up and origin from the comics. There's no reason they have to set it up the same way and use the same cultural flavorings or even the same concept. There's no reason they even have to emphasize the origin story. It's a pretty free field.

Marvel's Response

Re: Marvel's Response
(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)That's not the problem. The problem is that Swinton's character has all of the trappings of an Asian wise mentor, while being played by a white actor. It's either this close "" to yellowface, or actually crossing that line. (Not sure which until/unless I see the actual movie.)
If Marvel had instead gone all-out on the Celtic imagery for her character, you'd still see complaints about whitewashing a POC comics character, but not the additional complaints about yellowface. And if Marvel had done the really smart thing and combined a Celtic Ancient One with a POC Doctor Strange, then most of the criticism would have been enthusiastic praise instead.

Re: Marvel's Response
Anyway, I'm cool with it being Tilda. Tilda is cool. And if her being obviously non-Chinese is the writer's very subtle way of protesting what's been happening in Tibet for decades, that's fine.
Re: Marvel's Response
But when you really look at it, it's about money - they want to movie to be shown in China, so they hedge their bets.
