Damned if you do, damned if you don't. If she was played by someone Asian, you'd have people complaining about the "Wise Asian Master Helps The White Person Become The Best At The Thing" stereotype.

So, Disney is hedging their bets by genderswapping the Ancient One and then picking a androgynous actress to play them (since the Ancient One is sort of supposed to be this person that transcends time and space.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's kind of a fair point, in the sense that the original setup is pretty much just impossible to do in a way that really accords with our contemporary standards of depictions of race.

But, first, I think having the "Wise Asian Master" stereotype would be less bad than having Tilda Swinton.

Second, there's absolutely nothing pegging them to using the precise set-up and origin from the comics. There's no reason they have to set it up the same way and use the same cultural flavorings or even the same concept. There's no reason they even have to emphasize the origin story. It's a pretty free field.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, they are changing a good bit of the origin story afaik. Hard to tell how much and what this early in the game.

Solution: make Doctor Strange Asian-American :)

Ennnnh. I REALLY like Tilda Swinton, but if I want androgynous badassery, I'll rewatch Constantine. (Oh, Tilda Swinton, you were my transpiration back as a tiny.)

What movie is this, anyway?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm... Gabriel!Tilda. So hot.

I know, right? I'm not attracted to her, but I UNDERSTAND WHY OTHERS ARE! :D

It's from the upcoming doctor Strange, I believe.

I was just going to suggest OP watch Constantine instead, Tilda Swinton is so great in that movie.

Yeah, I think it says something that I remember NOTHING about that movie except her.

Marvel's Response

FYI

Incidentally, Starfleet's examination materials development panel took a lot of flack for serially depicting the Kobayashi-Maru as a white vessel.

Ah yes. A hairless, robe wearing, *Celtic* mysterious wise one. Whaaat? Is that seriously in the comics??

White people can't be mysterious wise ones now?

DA

That's not the problem. The problem is that Swinton's character has all of the trappings of an Asian wise mentor, while being played by a white actor. It's either this close "" to yellowface, or actually crossing that line. (Not sure which until/unless I see the actual movie.)

If Marvel had instead gone all-out on the Celtic imagery for her character, you'd still see complaints about whitewashing a POC comics character, but not the additional complaints about yellowface. And if Marvel had done the really smart thing and combined a Celtic Ancient One with a POC Doctor Strange, then most of the criticism would have been enthusiastic praise instead.

Wow, no. A 'Celtic' Ancient One with a 'POC' Doctor Strange would have been too clever by half. It would be better just to have them both obviously be the same ethnicity as the director.

I'd heard that it was about the Chinese market, but I thought it was a conspiracy theory. Good to get it from the horse's mouth, even if it's a ridiculous reason. I'm pretty sure Chinese people know that Tibet exists, they just consider it a province of China. So I don't know what he's thinking.

Anyway, I'm cool with it being Tilda. Tilda is cool. And if her being obviously non-Chinese is the writer's very subtle way of protesting what's been happening in Tibet for decades, that's fine.

I don't think it's about what the Chinese people would think, but about what the Chinese government would allow.

But when you really look at it, it's about money - they want to movie to be shown in China, so they hedge their bets.
